Quick answer: Start with your guest numbers and how they will be seated. As an approx. guide, a 6m x 6m structure marquee holds approx. 60 standing or 40 at round tables. A 10m x 12m holds approx. 200 standing or 120 at round tables. Then add space for a dance floor, bar and food service. If in doubt go one size up.
“What size marquee do I need?” is the first question most hosts ask. For a quick starting point, try our marquee size calculator. The answer depends on three things: how many guests are coming, whether they will stand or sit and what else needs to fit under the roof. This guide walks through each one so you can choose with confidence.
Step 1: Count your guests
Start with your confirmed guest list rather than the hopeful one. Then add a small buffer for late additions. Children usually count as guests too, especially if they will be seated for a meal.
Step 2: Decide how guests will be seated
The same marquee holds very different numbers depending on the layout.
- Standing (cocktail style): the most guests per square metre. Guests mingle with a few high tables or bar leaners.
- Rectangular trestle tables: long shared tables fit more seated guests into the same space.
- Round banquet tables: fewer guests per marquee but easier conversation and a more formal feel.
Step 3: Check our marquee capacities
As an approx. guide, here is what our structure marquees hold according to each product page. Figures assume the layout fills the marquee.
| Marquee | Cover | Standing (cocktail) | Rectangular trestles | Round banquet tables |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 6m x 6m | 36 m² | approx. 60 | approx. 48 | approx. 40 |
| 6m x 9m | 54 m² | approx. 90 | approx. 72 | approx. 60 |
| 6m x 12m | 72 m² | approx. 120 | approx. 96 | approx. 80 |
| 8m x 9m | 72 m² | approx. 105 | approx. 96 | approx. 60 |
| 8m x 12m | 96 m² | approx. 140 | approx. 128 | approx. 80 |
| 10m x 12m | 120 m² | approx. 200 | approx. 160 | approx. 120 |

Step 4: Add space for everything else
The capacities above assume tables or guests fill the whole marquee. Most events need room for more than that. Plan extra space for:
- a dance floor (see our dance floor guide)
- a bar or drinks station
- a buffet or food service area
- a band, DJ or speeches area
- a cake table, gift table or welcome table
- clear walkways for guests and staff
A simple approach is to choose the marquee that fits your seated guests, then go up one length for the extras. Because our structure marquees extend in 3 metre lengths, adding an extra section is straightforward.
Step 5: Check the site
The marquee also has to fit your space. Measure the area before you book.
- Structure marquees need a minimum of 1 metre of extra space on each side.
- A 3m x 3m pagoda needs an install space of 4m x 4m.
- A 6m x 6m pagoda needs an install space of 7m x 7m.
Look out for slopes, garden beds, trees, pools and anything overhead. If the ground is concrete, decking or somewhere pegs cannot go, the marquee will need a weighted install. Let us know when you enquire.

Where pagodas fit in
Pagoda marquees suit smaller gatherings, entrances, drinks areas and ceremonies. Our 3m x 3m pagoda easily fits a trestle table for food or presentation. Pagodas are waterproof and can be joined together to create a larger covered area. For larger seated numbers a structure marquee gives you more open space per square metre.

Choosing tables to suit your marquee
The table you choose changes how many guests fit. Our 180cm round banquet table seats 8 to 10. A 2.4m trestle seats 10 and a 1.8m trestle seats 8. Browse the full table hire range.
