Do You Need Flooring Under a Marquee? A Guide for Brisbane Backyards

Clear-roof structure marquee with a raised timber floor on a country lawn

Quick answer: You do not always need flooring under a marquee. On a flat, firm, dry lawn for a short daytime event, grass can be fine. Flooring is worth it for seated dinners, dancing, uneven or soft ground and any event where rain is possible. Our options include integrated Premium Timber or Whitewash Timber flooring, Pro Floor and Black Plank & Ply.

A marquee gives you a roof. Flooring gives you a proper room. Whether you need it depends on your ground, your event and the weather. Here is how to decide and which marquee flooring suits which job.

When you can skip flooring

Grass can work well under a marquee when:

  • the lawn is flat, firm and well drained
  • the event is short or mostly standing
  • the forecast is dry
  • guests are in casual footwear

Mow the lawn a day or two before and avoid watering it the night before the event.

When flooring is worth it

Flooring makes a clear difference when:

  • The ground is uneven or soft. A level floor keeps tables steady and chairs from sinking.
  • Rain is possible. Brisbane storms can soak a lawn quickly. A floor keeps shoes dry even when the grass is wet.
  • You are hosting a seated dinner. Tables and chairs sit level and guests can move easily.
  • There will be dancing. Grass is hard to dance on, especially in heels.
  • The event is formal. A finished floor makes a marquee feel like a venue.
  • The marquee is up for several days. A floor protects both guests and the lawn.

Your marquee flooring options

Premium Timber and Premium Whitewash Timber flooring

Our Premium Timber Flooring is built by us with the marquee integrated into it. It features a sub-steel frame laid with timber flooring panels. The Premium Whitewash Timber option gives a lighter finish. Both are available as add-ons for our structure marquees. Choose them in the Add-Ons section of your structure marquee when you book.

This is the most polished option for weddings, formal dinners and milestone celebrations.

Pro Floor

Pro Floor is a lightweight yet heavy-duty flooring solution suited to events and high foot traffic. It comes in black and is hired by the square metre. It is available for both structure marquees and pagoda marquees.

Black Plank & Ply

Black Plank & Ply gives you a sleek black surface that suits evening events and dance floors. Sizes are 3.6m x 3.6m, 4.8m x 4.8m and 6m x 6m. Custom sizes are also available. Our team installs it for you.

Other options

Our event flooring range also includes artificial turf, carpet tiles and aisle runners. Aisle runners are a lovely touch for a ceremony.

Think about the season

Brisbane’s warmer months bring heat, humidity and the chance of a sudden storm. A lawn that is firm in the morning can be soft by evening after a downpour. If your event falls in spring or summer, flooring is a sensible safeguard even when the forecast looks clear. In the cooler, drier months a firm lawn is more likely to hold up on its own. Either way, a floor gives you one less thing to worry about on the day.

Flooring and dance floors

You can floor the whole marquee or just add a dance floor. Many hosts do both: a base floor for the dining area plus a dance floor near the music. Outdoor timber dance floors suit grass and come in sizes from 6m x 3m to 8m x 9m. Indoor dance floors suit hard, level surfaces. Our team installs both. For help choosing a dance floor type and size read our dance floor hire guide.

Check your site before you book

  • Slope: tell us about any slope when you enquire. Floors need a suitable base.
  • Surface: let us know if the marquee is going on grass, concrete, pavers or decking. Hard surfaces where pegs cannot go need a weighted marquee install.
  • Access: note gate widths, steps and long carries. If equipment needs to go into a backyard, Extended Carry & Access may apply.
  • Size: match the floor to the marquee. Our guide to what size marquee you need can help or you can work out your marquee size in a minute.
